Poetry: Takers

Takers

Help us walk with the land.

Protect us from harm

as we vow

to preserve your treasures.

Repeat not what I say

Give thanks in your own way.

Ask not

what can I get from this?

Ask instead

how can I connect with all that lives here?

Harvest with intention,

this land takes time to heal.

Take a look but

claim nothing as yours.

Get ready to be wowed

by the kinship we can feel

with soil,

with rock,

with sky

in reverence with our ancestors.

What you ask

brings tears to my eyes?

Pillaged land

raped

by human greed.

If you must take,

take time to swim,

take time to paint,

take time to sing.

take time to praise

all that you see and smell.

Protect what nourishes you

as you walk with the land.
