A Poem: Meet My Muse

I met my muse today

though…

I don’t always recognize her

…at first.

My muse

is a shapeshifter.

Today she is a raven

from the underworld

sitting on the canyon rim

watching me and my dog run.

When I see her,

I wave

and she calls back to me

immediately.

Today my muse is a messenger,

checking in on me,

observing us,

so I blow her a kiss

to carry with her

back to the dead.

My muse

does not fly away

until I’ve rounded the corner

deeper into the canyon of sandstone.

I saw my muse today.

Her presence is a message

without words.

My muse

is a shapeshifter,

a world traveler,

boundless and beautiful.

She moves through the realms of

dreamland,

the future,

and the past

as if they were all the same thing.

My muse

is always with me

even when I cannot see her.

Today, my muse announced her arrival

without words

but I heard her.

Because her presence

is always a message

of love.

Today she told me

that what I’m doing is

Fabulous!

and she admired my strength.

Nodding in approval,

she made note of my progress.

My muse

is watching me

shift.

A Poem: Sustenance

It used to be the trees who spoke to me. It was the branches I sought for direction And leaves I looked to for protection. All my life I ran to the forest for it was all I knew. Now I know more I’ve seen something else… I’ve moved to land without a single tree…

A Poem: Rooted in Winter

I’m back in the woods but I didn’t have a dog last time I was here so we can’t sleep in the treehouse anymore. The ladder is thirty feet tall and rickety! I can’t carry her up and down it every time she has to pee. What is she going to do? Lift her leg…

A Poem: My Mind is Stuck in Summer

Most of the time, I consider myself a closet poet. I’ve never formally studied poetry and sometimes I wonder if what I’m writing is poetry or just short sentences. What’s the difference? I tease myself. I just completed a six week poetry class and haven’t shared anything that I wrote from the course. This is…

A Desert Soul

“You’re such a desert soul,” he said. What does that mean? Up until now I have been a mountain momma. I suppose I’m growing into new love, Expanding what I consider to be beautiful: Curvaceous rocks and hairy cacti, Twisty juniper bark and their spongey leaves, Slick white rock faces and dust in my shoes,…

My Worth Is In The Wilderness

I know my shadow better than my reflection. I don’t recognize my hands without dirt in the creases, Illuminating the lines and patterns of my palms. I see myself in the context of this meadow: small, yet influential. I watch my feet step over aspens and move along the trail of dandelions. I hear my…

Wealth Is Wilderness

What is wealth? In my world of backpacking, wealth is warmth. Wealth is a campsite all to yourself. Wealth is time with the wilderness. Wealth is taking more than a day trip. It is a week to four months to a life immersed in the incredible. Wealth is imagination. To look at a dry canyon…

Holy Sweeping Vista

Holy Sweeping Vista! Your expansive nature And your winding ways Bulge my eyes and lifts my spirit. Your peaks allow me to perceive magic And ponder your years. Who are we to you? Creatures of movement and waste, Creatures of judgement and haste? Even in our old age, We remain youthful to you, Oh Mighty…

A Nomad’s Heart

A nomad’s heart Is easy to win, Hard to keep. A nomad’s eyes Wide open, Searching and deep. A nomad’s feet Cracked and worn, No shoes can keep. A nomad’s soul Curious and kind With an expanding mind. A nomad’s intention: To live with purpose Outside of the house But not without a home. For…
